After months if not years of leaks about Nintendo’s next console, unofficially called the Switch 2 due to zero Nintendo-released information about it, we have a new report from a few sources that says it may actually be revealed this week.

This comes from leaker NatetheHate and aligns with a separate VGC report discussing the same topic. The information about the reveal is two-fold:

First, a reveal of the Switch 2 on Thursday, January 16. This would be just about the console itself, no games:

“I’ve heard that the reveal itself is going to focus almost exclusively on the console itself,” says Nate. “here is not going to be any presence of games. There could be a game shown running on the screen, depending on how the trailer is put together, but software is not going to be a focus.”

Then, there would be a separate reveal for software, reportedly down the road in late February or early March, a month or two away.

Nintendo tends to reveal information pretty late about its upcoming hardware, usually not that long before launch, which makes this prospect even more exciting. The original Switch, for instance, was officially announced in October of 2016, five months before the console’s actual release on March 3, 2017. So, using that math, if the Switch 2 is in fact revealed this week, that could theoretically put launch in June or July this summer. Nintendo has not felt the need to wait around for the holiday window as of late, and with 146 million Switch sales, it probably does not matter at all.

As for the leaks, the form factor of the console is reportedly going to be very similar to the current Switch, a departure for Nintendo which often has wildly different looking and functioning consoles between generations. But the Switch was such a huge hit it seems they don’t want to rock the boat.

Of course it will be more powerful. Much more, if other leaks are any indication which suggest base PS4 power as a handheld and PS4 Pro power when docked, potentially. One major question I have is the name of the console, whether it will be distinctive enough so the general public knows it’s a fully new system not an unnecessary upgrade, which is part of what sunk the Wii U after the original Wii was such a blockbuster. But Nintendo also does not seem prone to just put a “2” in the name either, so we’ll see.

If this information is correct, we will likely see Nintendo itself announce the date for the reveal soon. But if we get closer and hear nothing, perhaps this is wrong and it will come at a later date. But it’s worth penciling it in on your calendar just the same.
